KoblenzGround: Stadion Oberwerth Visits: 1 Date: 27th February 2010 Match: TuS Koblenz - Augsburg 0-1 (2. Bundesliga) Attendance: 6 585
The main match on this trip was the "Rheinisches Derby" between Bayer Leverkusen and Köln. Since that match had a 18.30 kick-off there was room for one more game this Saturday though. That game was to be in Koblenz. TuS Koblenz are currently second from bottom in the table in 2. Bundesliga and the game against high-flyers FC Augsburg started at 13.00, perfect timing for me. I was once more joined by Maik ar Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof for this 90 minute journey. Parts of the train journey was along the Rhein river giving us some fantastic views, especially as we got nearer to Koblenz. Once in Koblenz we used the shuttle bus service to the ground. When we arrived at the ground I picked up my ticket before meeting up with yet another groundhopper, Michael from Essen. Plenty of football to discuss! TuS Koblenz were promoted to 2. Bundesliga for the first time in 2006. Their ground, Stadion Oberwerth, has been renovated several times during the last seasons to comply with the 2. Bundesliga ground regulations. Undersoil heating has been installed and a new all-seated stand was built in 2007 in the southern curve of the ground. A second tier was also built to the East Stand meaning the ground now has around 7 500 seats and an overall capacity of 15 000. One interesting thing about Stadion Oberwerth is of course that in 1983 Edwin Moses set a new world record for 400 m hurdles (47,02 s) here and this is still today the second best time someone has ever had on this distance.
When it comes to the match we watched I have to be honest, this wasn´t the best of matches. There weren´t many chances but Augsburg looked the better side and 11 minutes from the end they managed to score. Koblenz were unable to equalise and lost by the only goal. Even if I had hoped for a better game and more goals this was a good day out. 12 degrees and glorious sunshine combined with meeting up with some new faces. Not a bad Saturday if you ask me!
