VimarvallenGround: Vimarvallen Visits: 1 Date: 28th August 2010 Match: Vimmerby - Motala AIF 2-2 (Division 2 Östra Götaland) Attendance: 1 127
Since my visit Vimmerby have moved to a new ground, Skobes Arena. This ground was opened in 2014. Pictures and information can be found at: Skobes Arena
The city of Vimmerby has a population of around 8 000 and is situated in the northeast of Småland county. Vimmerby is of course most famous for being the birthplace of Astrid Lindgren and the city´s major tourist attraction is Astrid Lindgrens Värld (The World of Astrid Lindgren). Having sold 145 millions copy in total she is one of the most famous authors Sweden ever had. Pippi Longstocking and other childrens favourites can every summer be seen at Astrid Lindgrens Värld. According to some of my younger relatives this is the most fun place to visit..... The local football team, Vimmerby IF, has in recent years being promoted several times and for the first time ever they are this season playing in the 4th tier of Swedish football. I had noticed they have had quite good attendances this year and for the visit of league leaders Motala I was expecting 5-600 to turn up. As I arrived at Vimarvallen an hour before kick-off I realised the attendance would be bigger than that. Free entrance as part of an Event day, combined with a famous band performing live before the game there were already plenty of cars at the car park. The official attendance was given as 1 127 which is a fantastic attendance for a Division 2 game. When the game eventually started it was an evenly balanced first half with chances for both teams and in the last minute before the break Motala went 1 goal up. Vimmerby equalised in the second half and the game seemed destined to finish 1-1. In the 89th minute Motala regained the lead and most of the crowd expected them to hold on for a very important win. Four minutes into stoppage time Vimmerby once again managed to equalise though and the game finished 2-2. A nice finish to a great day in Vimmerby. Vimarvallen is a great little ground and with good local support the club can progress further in the league pyramid.
