Víkingur Reykjavik

Ground: Víkingsvöllur

Visits: 1

Date: 22nd June 2013

Match: Víkingur Reykjavík - Haukar  2-2  (1. Delid)

Attendance: 153

For day three of my Iceland tour the plan was to visit two matches in 1. Delid. Víkingur Reykjavík vs Haukar (KO 14.00) and then Fjölnir vs Völsungur (KO 16.00). I know I wouldn´t be able to watch the full 90 minutes of both matches. My options were to leave five minutes before the end of the first match meaning arriving 6-7 minutes late at the second match OR watch the full 90 minutes of the first match but I would then miss 35 minutes of the second match. I had already decided for option 1. Since I had travelled a lot the previous days I decided to take it easy on Saturday morning. After a late breakfast I walked around in the city centre enjoying the nice weather. At the harbour area I found a bench with a nice view and life felt quite good. Later I went to an internet café before going to Hlemmur bus station. From Hlemmur I boarded the #6 bus to Gerði. From Gerði it was then a 10-12 minute walk to Víkingsvöllur, the home of Víkingur Reykjavík.

Víkingur Reykjavík have six times won the Icelandic league title. Outside the ground there were some flags indicating each title. As I entered Víkingsvöllur I spoke to the man selling tickets. He works for Icelandic TV and wished me a nice weekend in Iceland. I was also informed of a ÍB Vestmannaeyja, who I will visit tomorrow, have a new famous manager. Moments like this make visiting football grounds so much more interesting. Víkingsvöllur has one big stand on the east side of the ground. This ground has 1 100 seats which is more than enough for a club like Víkingur Reykjavík. My German colleagues who I met yesterday showed up at Víkingsvöllur as well. We could then watch quite a good match together. Both teams created plenty of chances but it was Víkingur Reykjavík who scored the only goal in the first half. Víkingur Reykjavík then made it 2-0 but a bad tackle meant a red card for a home player, giving Haukar a life-line. With seven minutes to go Haukar made it 2-1. I didn´t want to leave this exciting match but had no choice unless I wanted to miss 35 minutes of the Fjölnir match. As we came to Fjölnir I looked at my phone. Final score between Víkingur Reykjavík and Haukar was 2-2....
