Drottningskärs IF are based on the island of Aspö in the Karlskrona archipelago. To reach the island (pop. 560) you have to use the ferry from central Karlskrona and the journey time is around 25 minutes. Between 2016 and 2020 the club didn´t take part in league football but in time for the 2021 season the hard working locals had restored the pitch at Begsjövallen and the club was back in league action. Four weeks ago I was supposed to visit the island but as I was in the ferry queue I noticed the game had been called off and I went elsewhere. Saturday 26 September Drottningskär hosted Högadal in the last round of the promotion group in Division 6 Blekinge. I decided to try again and with the forecast saying sunshine and a blue sky I was in a good mood as I once again set off for Karlskrona. As I was waiting for the ferry I spotted several players with Högadal logos and I could finally relax, this game was definitely on. Karlskrona is Sweden´s main naval base and has been so for centuries. On Aspö there is a citadel, Drottningskärs kastell, built in the late 1600s to protect the naval base from the enemy. The ferry arrived some 55 minutes prior to kick-off and the ground is actually only 5 minutes by foot from the harbour. I decided to combine today´s football with some sightseeing and made the short drive to the citadel and in the nice weather I could take some really good photos!

I parked my car at the ground some 15 minutes prior to kick-off and as I paid for entrance I was very surprised to be given a physical ticket with date, ground and both clubs printed. In the lower leagues (and hardly in the top divisions either for that matter) in Sweden I have never been given this kind of ticket before. It cost 36 SEK, the club was founded in 1936, which is the cheapest I have paid for a ticket for many years. Once inside I noticed the pitch was in a poor condition and the dry summer is the main reason for that. As players and officials entered the pitch a few smoke bombs were set off, what a day this turned out to be! On the pitch Högadal started the best and were 2-0 up at half-time. In the 2nd half Drottningskär scored twice and at full-time it was 2-2. Both clubs will now take part in the promotion play-offs and I really hope Drottningskär will be promoted. Despite having to wait 50 minutes for the ferry as I was heading back home this was definitely one of the best groundhops this year.
