Ground: Romelevallen

Visits: 1

Date: 18th April 2015

Match: Veberöd - IFK Trelleborg  3-4  (Division 3 Södra Götaland)

Attendance: 150

At first I planned a visit to Ruddalen in Västra Frölunda (Gothenburg) this weekend. According the official website of the Swedish FA it was possible to watch two matches at Ruddalen, Assyriska BK vs Högaborg at 1pm and then Utsikten vs Assyriska IF at 4pm, on Saturday but apparently a ground in Superettan can´t host another match the same day. Last weekend the first match was moved to Sunday and I looked at other fixtures. A friend of mine (Mats) lives in Veberöd and since the local football team, Veberöds AIF, were playing at home I decided to go to Veberöd for my first domestic league game in 2015. My day started with a table-tennis game game though. At 10am I watched KFUM Kristianstad beat Vinnö 8-4 in a local derby in the Division 2 play-off. That match finished at 12.45 and 70 minutes later I was in Veberöd. I didn´t go straight to the ground though, first I went to Mats´ house to pick him up.

Veberöds AIF were promoted to Division 3 at the end of last season and the match against IFK Trelleborg was the opening match of the 2015 league season. Veberöd play at Romelevallen which is quite a basic ground with only one small stand in the north side of the ground. The by far biggest game ever played at Romelevallen was back in 1993 when Veberöd famously knocked IFK Göteborg out of the Swedish Cup. 3 500 turned up for that match and that attendance record will most likely never be beaten. A match against IFK Trelleborg is not as attractive as a match with one of the giants in Swedish football but an opening match in combination with the nice weather meant around 150 fans were at Romelevallen this afternoon. Those of us present could watch IFK Trelleborg scoring two early goals, 0-2 after 20 minutes. Both goals were the results of mistakes by the Veberöd goalkeeper though and before half-time IFK Trelleborg scored again, 0-3 after the first 45 minutes. Veberöd pulled a goal back but Trelleborg made it 1-4 and looked like comfortable winners. Veberöd refused to give up though and with 14 minutes to go it was suddenly 3-4 and Veberöd continued to press on for an equalizer. Despite numerous chances the home team failed to score their fourth goal and the match finished 3-4. For a neutral groundhopper this was an entertaining game but the home players were bitterly disappointed as the final whistle went. Anyway, a great day out for me which was finished off with dinner with Mats and his family.
