1860 München

Ground: Städtisches Stadion an der Grünwalder Straße (Grünwalder Stadion)

Visits: 1

Date: 3rd November 2017

Match: 1860 München - Memmingen  2-0  (Regionalliga Bayern)

Attendance: 12 500

Friday was moving day. The game I really wanted to go to over the weekend was Barcelona v Sevilla but waking up in Bilbao I needed some luck with the fixtures in Spain. I waited and waited but still no confirmation of kick-off times and when my deadline expired I booked a flight to Munich instead. In Munich I had the opportunity to visit Grünwalder Stadion (or Städtisches Stadion an der Grünwalder Straβe as it is officially called) on Friday evening and finish off the trip with Augsburg v Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday afternoon. My Lufthansa flight arrived 14.10 and an hour later I was at my hotel, situated some 250 metres from München Hbf. I then found a nearby Nordsee restaurant where I had something to eat and drink before returning to my hotel for a short rest. Grünwalder Stadion is easy to reach from München Hbf. With U-bahn it is only 5 stops to Wettersteinplatz, the U-bahn station next to the ground. Grünwalder Stadion was opened in 1911 and has a capacity of 15 000 (at the moment only 12 500 for safety reasons) and being only two tram stops from Grünwalder Straβe 114, the home of 1860 München and where the club´s different teams practise, it is easy to understand why 1860 fans regard this as their home stadium. Until 1995 1860 München played all of their games at Grünwalder Stadion but promotion to Bundesliga meant the club had to move to Olympiastadion. In 2004/5 the club played in 2. Bundesliga and could relocate back to Grünwalder Stadion. When the new Allianz Arena was opened in 2005 1860 München (and local rivals Bayern München) signed a 20-year agreement to use this ground. This was not popular with 1860 München fans but until 2017 they have been playing at the Allianz Arena. Being relegated from 2. Bundesliga at the end of last season and then not getting a license for 3. Liga meant 1860 München have to play in Regionalliga Bayern this season. The contract with Allianz Arena was terminated and the club could move back to their beloved ground at Grünwalder Straβe. So far every game this season have been sold-out and I was really looking forward to my visit.

Clubs with big away followings are given the entire Ostkrurve while clubs with only a few fans are given the small stand next to the Haupttribüne. Memmingen falls into the latter category and my ticket was for the Ostkurve, the only stand you can normally buy tickets for as the rest of the ground is sold-out with season-tickets. Tonight´s game was the first of the Rückrunde (second half of the season) and to celebrate being Herbstmeister (autumn champions) the home fans in the Westkurve had an impressive tifo, with fireworks before kick-off. With 1860 München being top and Memmingen in the relegation zone this should on paper be an easy win for the home team. Memmingen had a few (half-) chances but at half-time 1860 were deservedly 2-0 up. The second half was not that exciting and the game ended 2-0. Several times during the game home fans chanted “Grünwalder Stadion, Grünwalder Stadion …” and it is obvious it means a lot for them to finally be back home. One of those 1860 fans is groundhopper Philip (aka Graf von Giesing) and after the final whistle I met up with him outside the ground. We chatted for 30 minutes or so before he had to go back home. Early flight to London for him tomorrow morning. My journey will be easier, 50 minutes by train to Augsburg where I will complete the Bundesliga. Something to look forward to!
