Berliner AKGround: Poststadion Visits: 1 Date: 23rd October 2016 Match: Berliner AK - Hertha Berlin II 2-0 (Regionalliga Nordost) Attendance: 427
My game this Sunday afternoon was Berliner AK 07 (BAK 07) vs Hertha Berlin II at Poststadion. Poststadion is only a 10-minute walk from Berlin Hbf and after checking out from my hotel I went to the ground to take a few pictures. Poststadion was opened in 1929 as the home ground for Post SV Berlin, the club of German Post. In the 1936 Olympics several games took place and the Germany v Norway game attracted 55 000. When the Olympic Stadium was ready Poststadion lost its position as the most important football ground in Berlin. After the war the ground was partly destroyed and until 10 years ago the ground was in a poor condition. Nowadays the main stand has been modernized and new running tracks have been installed as well. With its central location it was possible for me to go to the game and still make the 18.00 flight back to Copenhagen. After I left Poststadion I decided to make a short sightseeing trip in central Berlin. My first visit to Berlin was in 1987. In those days going to Berlin was a very exciting trip for a Swedish teenager. Ferry from Trelleborg to Sassnitz and then bus through East Germany (DDR) until we reached the border between East- and West Berlin. During that trip, which was a school trip, I also crossed at Checkpoint Charlie during a day visit to East Berlin. I remember that trip very well and when I was back in Berlin for the 2006 World Cup it felt a bit surreal to stand at Checkpoint Charlie once again. This time the place was packed with tourists and not angry looking border guards. During the trip this weekend I stayed at a hotel next to Berlin Hbf and from there it was only a short walk to the Reichtagsgebäude and Brandenburger Tor. In 1987 the bus stopped outside Brandenburger Tor but the Soviet area started on the other side and we couldn´t cross the border here. This time around the place was packed with tourists and everyone was taking pictures.
Kick-off at Poststadion was at 13.30 and around 12.45 I was back at the ground. As I bought my ticket I was instructed to go to the left (in the seated stand) if I was a Hertha fan and to the right if I was a BAK 07 fan. I replied I was from Sweden and a neutral for this game. The people at the entrance laughed and seemed confused. BAK 07 is a club with Turkish roots and the food served inside the ground was of course Turkish. I can honestly say it was the probably the best food I have ever had at a football ground, very tasty. In total 417 turned up for the game and 400 of those supported BAK 07. Regionalliga Nordost is one of five leagues in the fourth tier of German football. The winners (as well as the runner-up in Regionalliga Südwest) then play home and away against another winner and three clubs are then promoted to 3. Liga. Carl Zeiss Jena are currently top in Regionalliga Nordost but BAK 07 and Hertha BSC II are both in the chasing pack so three important points at stake this afternoon. Hertha had a good chance early on but in the 6th minute BAK 07 scored to make it 1-0. The first half was quite good but the second half was of lower quality. In the 84th minute BAK 07 scored again though to win the game 2-0. As I left the ground the weather was glorious and 45 minutes after the final whistle I was at Berlin Tegel airport. A nice weekend in Germany was coming to an end but in 10 days time I come back for the Dortmund v Sporting CP Champions League game. ![]() Brandenburger Tor
