A week off work and a full round of (midweek) matches in the English leagues is always a good combination. My original plan for this Tuesday was a trip to Stoke (vs Sunderland) but when that match was moved I went through the fixture list and decided to go to the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster for the South Yorkshire derby against Barnsley. I arrived in Doncaster shortly after noon where I changed to a city bus, my hotel was near the racecourse. After checking at my hotel I made the short walk to the ground, at least that was my thinking. After wandering around for 30 minutes I asked an elderly gentleman for help, he looked at my map and said "You have an old map, that (pointing at the ground in my map) is the old ground". Thanks to his advice I eventually made it to Keepmoat Stadium, passing the lake with surrounding hills.
Keepmoat Stadium was opened on January 1st 2007 and have a capacity of around 15,000. Barnsley had sold out their allocation, meaning 3,000 away fans in the North Stand. They could see their side score the only goal and Doncaster are now rock bottom of the table. If they don´t improve dramatically they will be relegated back to League 1. It was a bitterly cold evening in Doncaster but as I made my way back to the hotel I could look back on visiting a local derby and a fine new stadium, I´ve had worse Tuesdays in my life.....
