Kongahälla

Ground: Kongevi

Visits: 1

Date: 28th June 2024

Match: Kongahälla - Vänersborgs FK  3-0  (Division 2 Norra Götaland)

Attendance: 150

Having not been to football for more than a week it was time for another mini-tour. It was a warm and humid day and on my way to Kungälv, just north of Gothenburg, I drove through a thunderstorm with some really heavy rain. Driving through Gothenburg during rush hour is not ideal but at 17.00 I finally arrived at my B&B in Kungälv. For the night I had booked a room in a cottage and with its remorse location it was both cheaper and more quiet than a regular hotel room. Kick-off was at 19.30 and prior to going to the game I had dinner at an Italian restaurant before picking up my friend (and local groundhopper) Christian. Kongevi in Kungälv is the nearest ground to where he lives and when he heard I was planning on attending he decided to join me.

Kongahälla v Vänersborgs FK was the last fixture for both teams before the summer break in Division 2 Norra Götaland. Kongahälla are 2nd in the table and needed to win tonight to keep up the pressure on the leaders IFK Skövde. In 1999 Kongahälla played in Division South, then the 2nd tier in Sweden, but in recent years they have been hovering around at level 4 and 5. The most famous player to play for Kongahälla is without a doubt Pontus Wernbloom who went on to play for IFK Göteborg and CSKA Moskva.

As the game was about to start Magnus, another local groundhopper, showed up as well and it was nice to meet him again. In time for kick-off the rain showers had disappeared and at time the sun was visible. Kongahälla scored in the opening minute and had several chances to score more goals but at half-time it was “only” 1-0. In the 2nd half Kongahälla scored twice to deservedly win 3-0. After the final whistle I dropped Christian offer and tomorrow my trip will continue with a visit to Skara.
