Malmö Idrottsplats was inaugurated 4th July 1896 and hosted a number of sports like athletics, gymnastics, speed skating and football. In the 1940s Swedish runner Gunder Hägg twice beat the world record (2 000 m and 1 mile) at Malmö IP. In 1956 the record attendance of 22 620 watched Malmö FF host Helsingborg but when Malmö Stadion was ready for the 1958 World Cup Malmö FF and IFK Malmö both moved to the new stadium. It wasn´t until 1999 that the Malmö clubs, due to a huge drop in attendances, returned to Malmö Idrottsplats which had been renovated to a "football only" stadium with a capacity of 7 000 (3 900 seats). When Malmö FF got better and better crowds they had to move back to Malmö Stadion and Malmö Idrottsplats is today only used by the women´s team FC Rosengård. IFK Malmö played at Malmö IP until 2009 when the club decided to move back to Malmö Stadion.
