München

Ground: Allianz Arena

Visits: 1

Date: 21st June 2006

Match: Ivory Coast - Serbia/Montenegro  3-2  (FIFA World Cup 2006)

Attendance: 66 000

After a week at home it was time to go to Germany for my fourth and fifth match in this World Cup. This time it was to Bayern and games in München and Nürnberg. I decided to stay in München for this trip and when I arrived I was greeted by a "wall of heat". It was very hot and humid and I decided to stay indoors as much as possible. Unfortunately both Serbia/Montenegro and Ivory Coast had lost their first two matches in the World Cup meaning this was a match without too much importance. The game was played at the Allianz Arena in München. This impressive new stadium was opened in May 2005 and have a capacity of 69 900. For the World Cup it was made all-seated with a capacity of 66 000. When I passed the stadium on my way from the airport it looked like a space ship had landed and the stadium really looks spectacular. To my surprise the stadium was full for the Serbia/Montenegro vs Ivory Coast game and the atmosphere much better than anticipated. Ivory Coast went two goals down but scored three goals in the second half to win the match 3-2. As I left the ground afterwards I could see the stadium was nicely lit-up. When Bayern München play at home the ground is lit red, when 1860 München play at home it is lit blue but for World Cup matches it was white (see picture below). I was soaked in sweat as I came back to my hotel but after visiting a ground like Allianz Arena I didn´t complain too much.
