MorecambeGround: Globe Arena Visits: 1 Date: 6th August 2013 Match: Morecambe - Wolverhampton 1-0 (League Cup) Attendance: 2 545
On Tuesday evening there were plenty of matches in England. A full round of matches in the League Cup meant I had plenty of choices and in the end I wanted to go to Rotherham vs Sheffield W. Since I needed a booking history to buy online I couldn´t get a ticket for that though. Instead I looked elsewhere and decided to visit Morecambe vs Wolves instead. With Morecambe being close to Preston this was an easy trip travelwise as well. After a later breakfast on Tuesday morning I went to Manchester where I spent a few hours before returning to Preston in the afternoon. Around 4pm I left for Morecambe and after changing trains in Lancaster I arrives in Morecambe around 4.40. The weather was really nice this Tuesday afternoon and I decided to go down to the ground to have a look and then head on towards the seaside. Morecambe Bay is the largest expanse of intertidal mudflats and sand in the United Kingdom, covering a total area of 310 km2 (120 sq mi). In 1974 the second largest gas field in the UK was discovered 25 miles west of Blackpool, with original reserves of over 7tcf. At its peak 15% of Britain's gas supply came from the bay but production is now in decline and the main field was mothballed in 2011. I was getting hungry and found a small cafe/restaurant and was told "It has been a busy day. We have ran out of beef so no roastbeef or burgers". I ordered chicken fillet with new potatoes. It cost £5 and I was expecting a small portion. Instead I was given a lot of excellent tasting food. A very nice place a bargain for me. I then went back to the ground to pick up my ticket.
Morecambe FC have played at the Globe Arena since 2010. The ground has a capacity of around 6 500. 2 200 seats are available in the main stand and the rest of the ground is made up of terracing. For most of their league matches around 2 000 fans show up at the Globe Arena. Wolves brought 700(?) fans to this match but it felt more like a relaxed day out in Sweden than a cup tie in England. In total 2 545 was inside the Globe Arena for this cup match that was shown live on Sky Sports. The TV-presenter was standing in the corner between the North and Home terraces and the actual trophy was on display as well. I was a bit tempted to nick the trophy but decided not to give it a go. I had bought a ticket foe the Home Terrace and was looking forward to see/hear what the Morecambe support was going to be like. It was quite good actually. Wolves had most of the early chances, attacking the goal in front of me, but Morecambe gained more and more possession of the ball. 0-0 at half-time but in the second half Morecambe came closer and closer to scoring. In the 84th minute they given a frre-kick right outside the penalty box. A superb free-kick later Morecambe had taken the lead. The atmosphere from the home fans the remaining minutes were as good as it will be at the Globe Arena this year.
Relegation to League 1 and now knocked out by Morecambe, tough times for Wolves fans. I was more pleased as I left the Globe Arena. Another good cup match and despite a horse-free evening I had a really good day out in Morecambe. Tomorrow I will go to Elland Road for Leeds vs Chesterfield which will be my last match on this trip.
