Skövde AIKGround: Södermalms Idrottsplats Visits: 1 Date: 22nd May 2011 Match: Skövde AIK - Sleipner 1-2 (Division 1 Södra) Attendance: 376
Two years ago Skövde were top of the table, 4 points clear, with two matches to go in Division 1 Södra. After losing their last two matches they missed out on promotion to Superettan on goal difference though. The 2011 season has not started well for Skövde either, before today´s match against Sleipner Skövde were 4h from bottom. With Södermalms IP being the last new ground for me to visit in Division 1 Södra I originally planned to make the 4 hour journey two weeks ago for the derby against Trollhättan. That match was moved to a Monday night meaning I had to wait two more weeks though. Unusually for this division I was not on my own for this match. In Värnamo I was joined by Henrik who had contacted me through this website and with 90 minutes to spare we arrived in Skövde. The weather forecast for the evening was heavy rain but when we arrived the sun was out. That was about to change though...
When the match started neither team were in control of things but Skövde manged to get the important first goal and were 1-0 up at half-time. A couple of minutes into the second half the bad weather, strong winds and heavy rain, made it to Skövde and the conditions were really bad for the last 40 minutes of the game. Somehow Sleipner seemed to like the bad weather and scored two goals, in front of as many away fans, and could hold on to a 2-1 win which actually sent them top of the table. Henrik and I ran back to my car and made a safe and quick getaway from Skövde. Södermalms IP, with running tracks and a 1 000 all-seated main stand combined with an open terrace on the far side, is a typical ground ground for this level but I still enjoyed this trip. After two hours driving through heavy rain I then dropped Henrik off in Värnamo before arriving back home at 23.45. A bit too late for this kind of match but at least I have one more ground on my list!
