Värtan

Ground: Hjorthagens Idrottsplats

Visits: 1

Date: 12th June 2026

Match: Värtans IK - Älta IF  1-0  (Division 4 Stockholm Mellersta)

Attendance: 100

The last time I was in Stockholm was back in 2023 (!) but with FC Järfälla being promoted to Ettan Norra I looked at possible dates to visit Järfällavallen and thereby re-complete the top three divisions in Sweden. With my summer holidays starting earlier than usual I decided the weekend 12-15th June was then I finally would make it to Stockholm once again. The train journey from Kristianstad, via Hässleholm, to Stockholm went smoothly and at 14.45 I was at my hotel in Alvik.

For this trip I had five matches lined up and first up on Friday evening was Värtan v Älta in Division 4 Stockholm Mellersta. Kick-off was at 8pm but this time of the year it doesn't get dart until 22.30 or so no floodlights needed. My friend Håkan lives in Liljeholmen and it has been more than a year since we last met. When I notified him about my upcoming trip to Stockholm he decided to join me at Hjorthagen and before the game we had dinner at a restaurant close to the ground. Hjorthagens IP is quite a basic ground with an artificial pitch and a small open stand in the east side. The gas holders behind the goal in the north end of the ground really adds some character though and from the café you had a good overview of the action.

Värtan are 3rd in the table and with Älta being in the relegation zone I was expecting an easy victory for the visitors. Värtan did win by the only goal but it wasn´t until the 58th minute the deadlock was broken. Älta had a very good chance to equalise but it was wrongly given as offside and it is fair to say the visitors were a bit upset. After the game there were some discussions with the referee but after a while things calmed down. On our way back to the Ropsten tube station we spotted a roe deer walking on the street. Apparently not unusual in Hjorthagen but still an oddity outside a ground. At 22.50 I was back at my hotel and being quite tired I quickly fell asleep.
